Users of Facebook and Twitter Making Money by Promoting Companies

According to News.com.au, over 500 Australian companies, including Reader's Digest, Perfume Connection, Starshots and Bevilles Jewelers, have signed up to the social media marketing website "socialloot.com" to advertise deals, products and services.

Any Facebook or Twitter user can log on to the website, select the companies he/she wants to promote, post information about them on his/her Facebook or Twitter account and get paid each time a friend clicks on the link.

The earnings of such users depend on the company, number of friends and followers they have, and their "online influence".

The site was launched in June 2010 and has a million Australian subscribers from Facebook and Twitter.  Now the website is planning to reach out to potential global subscribers.

However, there is the opinion that this kind of marketing could result in the decay and demise of social networking. ("Not a bad prospect at all!", some might mumble!)

Paul Harrison, a senior lecturer at the Deakin Graduate School of Business, said: "The moment you commercialise Facebook, you shift the nature of your online relationships."

Maruti Suzuki To Build Automobile Plant in Gujarat

Maruti Suzuki has obtained the necessary clearance from the Gujarat State Government to establish an automobile plant at Becharaji, Mehsana District, Gujarat. The company will invest about Rs.4,000 crores during the first phase of its project. The project was approved by the Board of Directors of Maruti Suzuki on Saturday. Maruti Suzuki may invest up to 18,000 crore in phases to produce two million cars in the long run.

It is understood that the plant would be set up in an area of about 500 acres identified for the purpose.

Becharaji enjoys strategic location in the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor (DMIC).

According to a senior official from the Industries Department of Gujarat, "From Becharaji, the company can export its cars from Mundra port in Kutch, as there is direct railway line. Also, entire North India, besides Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, can be catered to by the Maruti with multiple connectivity options." This, he explained, was why Becharaji had been preferred to Sanand where the factories of  Tata, Ford and Peugeot are under construction.

Whirlpool to Slash 5,000 Jobs to Trim Cost

Whirlpool Corp, the largest manufacturer of domestic appliances is, about to trim its workforce in Europe and North America by about 10 percent - resulting in a loss of some 5000 jobs - in view of the falling demand due to the current recessionary trends and the rising costs of raw materials like copper and steel.

To compensate for the slide in the sales in the North American market, Whirlpool has been looking up to the markets in emerging economies. But the recessionary impact seems to be more or less a worldwide phenomenon variable only in its intensity.

Whirlpool has also been trying to raise the cost of its products to offset the rising cost of production but has been limited by the pricing strategies of its competitors in the process.

Most of the proposed job cuts are in North America and Europe. The company's plant at Fortsmith, Arkansas, is going to be closed down as a part of the exercise. Closing the plant at Fortsmith will result in loss of employment to about 90 salaried personnel and about 900 workers paid on an hourly basis; another 800 workers have been on a layoff and are on a recall list. The dishwasher plant in Neunkirchen, Germany, will be relocated to Poland in January next year. These measures are expected to save about $400 million by the end of 2013.

Google Revamps its TV Service in a Fresh Bid at the Market

Google, in its attempt to have another go at the TV market in the face of the extremely tepid response to its introductory service, launched a new version of Google TV last Friday.

The new service is supposdd to be more user-friendly and is hoped to be a greater success with the end-users.

Google TV 2.0 brings with it some new tools for recommending movies, TV programs and online videos to TV viewers.

Software developers are also going to find it much easier to develop new applications to go with it.

At present, Google TV is bundled with some SONY TV's and some Logitech International set-top boxes; it allows users to access online videos and websites through their televisions apart from using specialised applications and playing videogames on their TV's.

The current user-base of Google TV 1.0 has never been revealed but market watchers believe that Google TV 1.0 has been a disaster. According to Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey "The fire they were trying to start never even got a spark."

Google TV 2.0 apparently hopes to change all that.

Reserve Bank of India Raises Repo Rate

The Reserve Bank of India, while announcing its mid-year credit policy, has increased the Repo Rate by 25 base points with effect from today. This is the 13th such hike in the last 18 months in its efforts to control inflation. These hikes have resulted in a cumulative rise in interest rates by 525 base points.

Repo rate is the rate of interest charged by the RBI on its loans to commercial banks. As a result of the hike, the borrowing costs of banks go up; in turn, the loans given by banks to their customers become costlier; one of the effects of the hike in Repo Rate is the increase in the EMIs on house loans, car loans, etc.

The Reserve Bank of India has also deregulated the interest rates on savings bank deposits with effect from today. The Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR), another important regulatory tool in the hands of the RBI, is unchanged; as a result, the CRR remains at 6%.

Because of double-digit inflation, RBI has chosen to jack up the Repo Rate despite the near-certain adverse impact on growth.

According to thed policy statement released by RBI, inflation is expected to show a downward trend from December 2011 and touch 7% by March 2012. The RBI policy is expected "to continue to anchor medium term inflation expectations" while stimulating growth.

"REVOLUTION 2020" - The New Book by Chetan Bhagat: A Review

"Revolution 2020" by Chetan Bhagat, the widely awaited latest offering from Chetan Bhagat,  has been already in the market for about a couple of weeks now.

Perhaps, in recent times, Indian readers have not waited as eagerly as they have for this latest book - "Revolution 2020" - by Chetan Bhagat.

Has the waiting proved worthwhile to Chetan Bhagat's zillion fans? The indications are that it has. Chetan Bhagat does not seem to have let his readers down with his "Revolution 2020".

Chetan Bhagat started his career as a writer of fiction with "Five Point Someone" and followed it up with "One Night @ the Call Center", "The 3 Mistakes of My Life", and "2 States". "Revolution 2020" is the fifth and latest work from the author who has become a cult figure of sorts. In the wake of  the phenomenal success of his earlier books many have tried to imitate him - but none has come anywhere close to him. Chetan Bhagat has proved to be simply inimitable.

Now about the book:

It all starts with a slice of Chocolate Cake. And the tale remains as tasty as a piece of rich chocolate cake. The master storyteller has certainly not lost his touch; if anything, he has honed his skills further.

Gopal, the son of a poor teacher, and Raghav, the son of an engineer, become friends with Aarti, the daughter of an honest but pragmatic IAS Officer who happens to be the DM in Varanasi.

The trio who are in Class 5 when the story starts soon outgrow school and are ready for the rat race called higher education. Raghav makes it to BHU, Varanasi, after cracking the famous JEE of the IIT's. Gopal who doesn't qualify in JEE goes to Kota - the place famous for the sub-human factories euphemistically known as "coaching centers" - to prepare for the next edition of JEE.  Aarti, saddled with no ambition to be an engineer but nursing an ambition to become an air hostess, opts for Psychology Honours.

Gopal whose heart is filled with Aarti leaves for Kota while Aarti who has no stomach for a romantic entanglement with Gopal, and Raghav who has a passionate resolve to rid Indian society of its various ills and inequities, remain in Varanasi.

Eventually, love blossoms between Aarti and Raghav - as it often does, given sufficient chance, between a pretty girl with angelic looks and an intelligent young man with a bright future ahead of him.

A year passes and Gopal returns home after taking the JEE and AIEEE; he fails to qualify in both. Gopal's father who had borrowed heavily for his son's training in Kota and nursed fond hopes and unrealistic - but natural - expectations about Gopal dies out of shock and grief. Gopal, who had already lost his mother when he was a child, becomes an orphan.

Gopal's father had a plot of agricultural land - a very valuable asset - but it had been under litigation because of his covetous, greedy brother.

Here is Gopal who has the daunting task of finding something to do and something to eat. He is introduced to Shukla-ji, an MLA, by a friend (Sunil) who sees a potential goldmine in the land belonging to Gopal. Gopal's uncle falls in line after the not so subtle interventions of Shukla-ji. Gopal and Shuklaji go on to co-found an engineering college on the land.

Raghav chooses, after his graduation from BHU, to be a journalist with a passion to usher in a revolutionary change in the contemporary corrupt society all around him.

Aarti goes on to become a Guest Relations Officer at a five-star hotel in Varanasi.

Enough said. Now I step back from the book so that you can't call me a spoilsport and Chetan Bhagat can't curse me for killing his sales!

The revolution that Raghav has in mind pales before the revolutionary change in Gopal. In my opinion, "Revolution 2020", the book, is not so much about Raghav's vision as it is of Gopal's dramatic transformation.

Chetan Bhagat is no Charles Dickens, Jeffrey Archer or P.G.Wodehouse. But, boy, he knows how to captivate his readers with his breezy style. His fiction is light alright but it is not what I would dismiss as 'pulp'. Someday Chetan Bhagat might care to evolve into a gripping story-teller like Arthur Hailey whose well-researched books have awed a couple of generations of readers across the globe; he has the brains for the research and the skill with his storytelling.

There are a few - just a handful - mistakes of grammar/idiom/usage in the book; a more hawk-eyed editor might have eliminated them.

Chetan Bhagat's handling of the "intimate" scenes is quite refined. But I think he could well have avoided the occasional F-word quite easily.

The book is well brought out; the paper is good and the printing is clean. And it is inexpensive just like the other books of Chetan Bhagat. The pricing strategy itself may have been partly responsible - just partly - for the phenomenal success of a remarkable storyteller called Chetan Bhagat.

New proposed telecom draft will allow the users to port their mobile numbers, keeping the same number even while switching service areas.

With new proposed policy the distinction between local and STD calls would vanish, as the policy aims at a 'one-nation-one-licence' regime.

Telecom operators would not need any separate licences for operations in various parts India and a single licence would be enough.

"We will seek TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) recommendations on new licences, migration to new licences and exit policy," Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said.

The full & final Telecom Policy will be declared in December.

Another Notice To Shah Rukh Khan Over Building Violations By Govt.

A fresh notice has been issued to Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan by Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority over his Bandra house. Municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar will now verify a complaint that alleges violation of environmental laws by the superstar.

Shahrukh got the first notice on August 24 where he was asked to explain the details regarding the allegations. This is the second time when he received the notification. If Shah Rukh found violated the environmental laws then the actor could face punishment.

The complaint was made by Amit Maru, and he alleged that the actor constructed a six-storey structure without the permission from the MCZMA. The coastal body's approval however was required as the Bandstand structure falls in the coastal regulatory zone.

Maru told media, "Also, the plot on which Mannat stands was earlier reserved for a public art gallery. The MCZMA's permission was not obtained before the BMC approved a proposal to modify the reservation to residential."

We have not heard any response from SRK’s end.
