Maruti Suzuki has obtained the necessary clearance from the Gujarat State Government to establish an automobile plant at Becharaji, Mehsana District, Gujarat. The company will invest about Rs.4,000 crores during the first phase of its project. The project was approved by the Board of Directors of Maruti Suzuki on Saturday. Maruti Suzuki may invest up to 18,000 crore in phases to produce two million cars in the long run.
It is understood that the plant would be set up in an area of about 500 acres identified for the purpose.
Becharaji enjoys strategic location in the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor (DMIC).
According to a senior official from the Industries Department of Gujarat, "From Becharaji, the company can export its cars from Mundra port in Kutch, as there is direct railway line. Also, entire North India, besides Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, can be catered to by the Maruti with multiple connectivity options." This, he explained, was why Becharaji had been preferred to Sanand where the factories of Tata, Ford and Peugeot are under construction.
