Namma Metro, the Metro Railway transport facility of Bangalore has been inaugurated today. Bangalore is third city - the other two being Kolkata and Delhi - to have Metro Railway.
Dinesh Trivedi, Union Minister for Railways, and Kamal Nath, Union Minister for Urban Development flagged off the first metro train here in the presence of D.V.Sadananda Gowda, Chief Minister of Karnataka, and other dignitaries.
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) will run the service from Mahatma Gandhi road to Byyappanahalli along a stretch of seven kilometers.
There are six stations along the route and it takes just 14 minutes to cover the entire stretch of seven kilometers. The service will be available from early morning till late evening everyday.
The Metro Railway connects the central business area of Bangalore with the the predominantly residential, eastern section of the city. The introduction of Metro Railway is expected to dramatically reduce the traffic snarls in Banglaore during peak hours.
The metro has been open to the public from 4PM today.
