Ford eyes small car priced at Rs 3-4 lakh

Ford Motor Company announced that they have started developing a global small car from its new Sanand (Gujarat) facility. Ford is aiming that this new car will able to compete with Maruti Suzuki A Star and Hyundai i10 in small car segment. This will be Ford’s cheapest model ever.

The car, which is likely to be priced at Rs 3-4 lakh, may hit the Indian market by early 2014 and will be positioned below the company's other small car Figo.

The car will be part of the eight new products that the company has lined up for the Indian market by 2015.

A Ford India spokesperson said: "Ford India has announced bringing eight new products by mid-decade that customers want and desire. We recently launched the global Fiesta, first of the eight new products, which is generating great interest. We have not made any specific announcements of future products to be manufactured from our new or current manufacturing sites."

The small car market in India is increasing extremely fast, driven by the middle class. To hold this huge potential market, leading car makers across the global is now concentrating on developing small family car at cheap rate. Already the market has seen fierce competition between Maruti-Suzuki, Renault-Nissan, Volkswagen and Tata Motors to tap the middle class car lovers.
