Supreme Court Rejects CBSE Plea to Combine Medical & Engineering Entrance Exams

The Supreme Court has rejected the application by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to conduct a common entrance examination for engineering and medical admission.

A bench headed by Justice R. V. Raveendran refused to go into the issue after he was briefed that the ministry of health and family welfare had found the proposal impractical because of technical difficulties.

The bench was of the opinion that the proposal required a proper hearing for which a separate petition should have been filed. The Directorate General of Health Services had opined that benefits of convenience should not lead to any compromise on the substantive merits of either examination.

The CBSE had proposed merger to facilitate students who had opted for both biology and mathematics at the 10+ 2 level to appear for both streams at ease. However the Medical Council of India said that they continue to conduct a single entrance examination to fill seats in all medical courses in the country.
